Representative numbers
Wheat is one of the first crops in the supply of seeds in the Country. Total production, including all categories (genetic, basic, C1,
C2, S1 e S2), amounted to 751,6 thousand tons in the 2016 crop year, occupying an area of 220.1 thousand hectares of seeds of the
cereal, according to estimates in July 2017 by theMinistry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (Mapa). The numbers, although
representative, are inferior to the previous year. The states of Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul, in the South, leaders in the production
of this kernel, also occupy the first position in the production of seed.
Considering only the S2 category, the production volume registered year after year increases, from210.8 thousand tons in 2016,
in the sevenwheat producing states. Increases occurred in Rio Grande do Sul, São Paulo, Minas Gerais andMato Grosso do Sul. Bra-
zilian exports of wheat seed are little expressive. In 2016, there was a slight rise, but sales still remained at 471 tons (sold for US$
313,595), compared to 162 tons shipped in 2015 (totaling US$ 109,580).

from research works. “These technologies
are relative to both production in the field
and management throughout the several
stages of the crop”, Luiz adds.
The prominent position reached at the
basis could also be extended to the produc-
tion system as a whole, the research repre-

self-sufficiency,thewheatseedsector,aswell
as of all other relevant crops, is prepared to
meet market demand, including the supply
of seeds for the acquisition of self-sufficien-
cyintheproductionofwheatintheCountry”,
