BIGGER AREA AND MORE SALES
Still with regard to the 2016/17 growing season, the Center for Applied Studies on
Advanced Economics (Cepea), of the Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture (Esalq), a
divisionoftheUniversityofSãoPaulo(USP),concludedthattheclimatein2016wasfa-
vorable to productivity, with a more severe winter and timely rainfalls. “Furthermore,
the thermal amplitude contributed towards the good development and color of the
fruit”. Thus, he observed that the quantity of Gala apples remained close to the histor-
ical volume, and Fuji apples exceeded the historical average. Regarding the respective
prices, January throughNovember 2017, they dropped 36%and 46%.
In viewof this, and evenbecause orchard renewals have led to smaller spacing be-
tween trees, resulting into higher productivity, Cepea officials ascertained, by mid-
2017, the chance for a slight decrease in the area devoted to apples. But by year’s end
they estimated a slight increase of 1.7-percent in planted area in the 2017/18 grow-
ing season, in particular, in the main apple producing State, Santa Catarina, relying
on plans devised by some companies in Fraiburgo, along with some bigger areas de-
voted to apple farming in São Joaquim, through orchard renewals and land leasing
schemes. RioGrande do Sul is the second biggest producer.
The expressive volume of national apples in 2017, plus their quality in color and
caliber, according to Cepea sources, were greatly responsible for the sales abroad,
which had fallen 50-percent in the previous year, when apples were scarcely avail-
able. Lower domestic prices were also a factor in the shipments abroad, according
to the analysis, which reiterates good conditions for shipments in 2018, in light of
smaller supplies in Europe and the newly conquered markets of Russia and India,
again generating good perspectives with regard to exports this year.
