razilian aquiculture registered
higher values over the past
years, despite lots of difficulties
experiencedby the sector, along
with the economic and political
crisis. The value of aquiculture production
reachedR$ 4.607billion in2016, upR$ 1,552
billion from the result of R$ 3.055 billion
in 2013, year in which aquiculture was in-
cluded in the Municipal Livestock Research
(MLR) program of the Brazilian Institute of
Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
Fish farming accounted for 70.9 per-
cent of the total value in 2016, followed
by shrimp farming (19 percent), newly-
hatched fish (5.8 percent), shrimp larvae
and post-larvae (2.5%), oysters, mollusks
and mussels (1.5 percent), and other ani-
mals (0.1%). Fish farming reached a total
of 507.121 thousand tons in 2016, up 4.4%
from the previous year. The executive pres-
ident of the Brazilian Association of Pisci-
culture (Peixe BR), Francisco Medeiros, es-
timates that the strides made by the sector
in2017outstrippedby far thepercentage in-
crease of the previous year, driven by the ti-
lapia production sector. “For the next years,
fish farming should progress by more than
15 percent a year”, he projects.
Fish production, just like the previous
year, soared in the regions in the North (1.4
percent), South (6.9 percent) and South-
east (43.1 percent), according to a sur-
vey conducted by the IBGE. Nonetheless,
it went down 7.8% in the Northeast and
11.8% in the Center-West. In the Northeast,
fish farming was adversely affected by the
drought, which, in turn, affected the vol-
ume of water in the dams and other pro-
ductive activities that depend on water
resources. Aquiculture is present in all 27
Brazilian states and 2,910municipalities.
The State of Rondônia, in the North of
the Country, was the leading fish producer
in2016, with a total of 90.64 thousand tons,
up 7.3 percent from the previous year. Pa-
rana continued in the second position,
with 76.06 thousand tons, up 9.8 percent
