tions from the Weak Meat operation in Brazil
and the involvement in corruption scandals
of the biggest Brazilianmeatpacking network
(JBS), Brazil, according toFAOsources, should
expand its shipments in volume, should the
rising production and export trend hold. The
decline in domestic prices, which turned Bra-
zilian meat into one of the cheapest in the
world, tend to generate more shipments, but
maynottranslateintohigherprofits.
At the same time, Australia and New Zea-
land should each lose around 5 percent of
their share in the global market, for the sec-
ondyearinarow,byvirtueoftheimpactcom-
ing fromclimate conditions upon their capac-
ity to supply their customers. Indian exports,
which were very close to the volume export-
edby Brazil in the past season, should remain
steady at 1.6million tons. FAO officials have it
that the prohibition for the purchase of ani-
mals for slaughtering purposes – for religious
reasons –will haveno impact upon this coun-
try’s shipments abroad. India operates with
markets of live animals of inferior quality, and
does not competedirectlywith Brazil or other
Mercosurcountries,forexample.
