tons to ship to around 100 different destinations in the world, bringing in revenue of
US$2.1billion, in2017. Thesenumbers area repeat of the results in2016, according to
an analysis by the international consultancy firm contracted by the Interstate Tobac-
co Industry Union (SindiTabaco). With such a performance, the Country keeps con-
trol over 18% to 20% of the global market in terms of revenue, which reaches a total
of nearlyUS$11.3billionayear since2014, according toglobal entitiesof the sector.
Together, the 10 countries that lead global exports represent two thirds of the rev-
enue involvedwith the global leaf tobacco trade. Native toAmerica, where people tra-
ditionallyuseditasmedicineorstimulant,inreligiousrites,theplantarrivedinEurope
in the first days of the 16th century. Fromthere it spreadacross theworld, returning to
the United States with the British settlers, and then began to gain relevance in trade
and consumption. Nowadays, tobacco is cultivated in 125 countries, on four million
hectares, according to recent data releasedby theUnitedNationsOrganization (UNO).
