Anuário Brasileiro do Tabaco 2017 - page 49

HISTORY OF THE GROWTH
Based in Geneva, Switzerland, Japan Tobacco International (JTI) is a glob-
al company with more than 27 thousand collaborators. Operating in 73 coun-
tries, it is one of the leaders in the cigarette market in the world, and produces
renowned brands like Winston, Camel, Mild Seven/Mevius, Benson & Hedges,
Silk Cut, Sobranie, Glamour and LD. In Rio Grande do Sul, the company op-
erates in Santa Cruz do Sul since 2009, when it purchased two tobacco pro-
cessing companies. The following year, the unification of the company took
place, and the local units came to be known as JTI Processadora de Tabacos
(ex-KBH&C Tabacos) JTI Kannenberg (ex-Kannenberg & Cia Ltda.).
Besides the tobacco unit, the company runs a research center and a dis-
tribution center. The three Southern States are home to the tobacco purchas-
ing centers. But it is in Rio Grande do Sul, more precisely in Santa Cruz do Sul,
where the biggest number of collaborators, both permanent and temporary,
work in such sectors as leaf processing, the Agronomy Development and Ex-
tension Training Facility (ADET) and in support areas. The unit responsible for
cigarette sales in Brazil is based in São Paulo.
Our initial expectations are nowbeing revised and
there is a chance for us to hiremore people than
initially estimated. Our bid consists in continuing
contributing towards the development of the region.”
