ith its unique flavor and
aroma, bananas are a fa-
vorite with Brazilians.
Ease of access is also a
factor in the high levels
of consumption, as this fruit is present in
all corners of the Country. The predilection
can be ascertained in the numbers, as ap-
proximately 99%of the national production
supplied the domestic market in 2016. The
banana crop reached a total of 6,962,134
tons, inanarea of 474,054 hectares. The ac-
tivity comprises about 800 thousand pro-
duction units, most of them run by small-
scale farmers or family farmers.
According to researcher Áurea de Albu-
querque Gerum, from Embrapa Cassava
and Fruit Farming, in Cruz das Almas (BA),
the two main producing regions in Brazil,
together correspond to two thirds of the to-
tal production in Brazil. The Northeast pro-
duced 2,381,619 tons in the current season
(34.27% of the national production), and
the Southeast, 2,195,543 tons (31.59%). In
