The Brazilian shipments of the vitivini-
culture sector amounted toUS$ 77.37mil-
lion in 2016, down 5.43% from the ship-
ments in 2015, which was down 8.32%
from the exports in 2014. “Among the
products, only table grapes suffered de-
creases in exports, 10.39% in quantity
and 9.75% in revenue. Exports of all oth-
er items increased in quantity and value”,
saysresearcherLoivaMariaRibeirodeMel-
lo. Shipments of grape juice soared 7.62%
in quantity and 18.04% in value. Wine ex-
ports,inturn,registeredanincreaseof42.5
%inquantityand52.94%in revenue.
The result of the vitiviniculture sector
in 2016 showed a deficit of US$ 292,923
million, down 2.61% from 2015. “Both
imports and exports suffered a reduc-
tion in the sum of the values traded in
2016. However, reductions in exports
outstripped reductions in imports”. Loiva
ponders that, specifically for the case of
tablegrapes, theaverageprice fetchedby
the national grapes outstripped the price
of imported grapes. The value fetched by
grape exports went up from U$ 2.10 per
kilogram in 2015 to U$ 2.12 per kilogram
in 2016. Average prices paid for import-
ed grapes also soared from U$ 1.57 to
U$1.65 per kilogram.

Production reached 987,059 tons
in 2016, down 34% from 2015
lograms of grapes, representing only 35.02%
of the national production. “The remain-
ing part of the production, 65.98%, was des-
tined for fresh consumption”, he explains. In
previous years, the fruits destined for the in-
dustryamountedto673,422tonsin2014and
781,412 tons in2015.
In spite of the economic and climate re-
lated adversities, Loiva has it that the per-
formance of the winegrowing sector was
good in 2016. “With the sharp reduction
in the production of grapes, the compa-
nies resorted to the stocks from the previ-
ous years to avoid supply shortages”, she
comments. “However, the low stocks cur-
rently existing could have negative reflec-
tions on commercialization over the next
years, should there be a new reduction in
the size of the grape crop”. She recalls that
the market of the sector was also regulat-
ed through higher prices of the rawmateri-
al and of grape-based products.
