No more barricades
Unlocking old and newmarkets, whilst conquering new clients around
the world, brought smiles to Brazilian cattle farmers, nowmaking plans
News of unblocked new – and old – in-
ternational markets made the Brazilian meat
supply chain happier than the practical re-
sults achieved in 2015. Sales to the global
market receded 10.9% in volume, from 1.56
million tons to 1.39 million tons, and 18% in
revenue, from US$ 7.2 billion to US$ 5.9 bil-
lion, compared to 2014, considering the civil
year, January through December.
The Associationof BrazilianBeef Exporters
(Abiec) has it that the reduction in shipments
and revenue is associated with economic
problems, which affected the performance of
some relevant clients like Russia, Hong Kong
and Venezuela. In spite of this, in the entire
year, Hong Kong, the European Union and
Egyptwere topbuyers of thenational product.
Other countries noteworthy for their
meat purchases from Brazil in 2015, both
in quantity and revenue, are Egypt, Iran, the
United States and Israel. The most negoti-
ated meat category over the year was fresh
meat, bringing in revenue of US$ 4.6 from
the shipment of 1 million tons (January
through December 2015).
Abiec president Antonônio Jorge Ca-
mardelli has it that 2015 came to a close with
steps forward regarding some strategic ini-
tiatives of the sector, like the resumption of
shipments toChina and the Final Rule for the
United States. Brazil also won back old cus-
tomers when the embargo on Brazilian beef
was lifted by Saudi Arabia, Iraq, South Africa
and Japan, whose restrictions were blamed
on the atypical case of Bovine Spongiform
Encephalopathy (BSE), in 2002.
Besides the chance to export 50 thou-
sand tons to Saudi Arabia, other nations, like
Qatar, Bahrein and Kuwait, are likely to re-
sume their meat purchases from Brazil, as
they comply with the same requisites. Ac-
cording to Abiec sources, the entity contin-
ues with its strategy of pursuing new desti-
nations for Brazilian beef, like Mexico and
such Asian countries as Taiwan, Indonesia
and Thailand. Within this context, the entity
intends to carry on with its negotiations with
Japan, a country interested in fresh meat,
while with China the negotiations involve
giblets and meat on the bone.
