The consumption of vegetables has re-
sented “the constant bad news spread by our
authorities who insist on throwing blatant
lies into mass media” about pesticides used
by the sector, comments Waldir de Lemos,
president of the Commercial Association of
Producers and Users of Ceasa Grande Rio
(Acegri), and also president of the Sectoral
Chamber in the Country. To fight “these lies”
and avoid the confusions and unrest gener-
ated in different situations, he says that work
is underway intended to convince the Nation-
al Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) to lib-
erate products that bear the specifications
required by every different crop.
The National Flowers and Vegetables
Committee, created by the Brazilian Con-
federation of Agriculture and Livestock
(CNA), in 2015 acts within the same con-
text. The register for pesticides for “minor
crops” and the debates on this matter, “are
important tools that help the farmers pro-
tect their crops against pests and diseases,
whilst keeping them within the boundaries
of legislation”, says Eduardo Brandão Cos-
ta, technical advisor. Furthermore, the organ
is interested in promoting the consumption
of vegetables, still low at the moment, and
come up with alternatives for boosting the
sector’s sales abroad.
products. It is a segment that has been making
strides, for example, pre-fried frozen French
fries, which jumped from 188 thousand to 314
thousand tons, from2009 to 2012.
The Brazilian Micro and Small Business
Support Service (Sebrae), in this regard, ob-
served over the past years, along with organic
crops, “great demand for products of different
size and color, and hefty supplies of products
by the industries that deal with “preserved, fro-
zen or deep frozen vegetables, dehydrated and
lyophilized, in addition to minimally processed
vegetables”. Themarket inquestionequally reg-
istered a rise in “ready-to-consume products”,
for their practicality and smaller losses.
The so-called mini vegetables (genetically
reduced) and “baby-leaf salads” (young leaves
grown throughmanagement skills) also gained
momentum, through a visual, taste and prac-
ticality combination, pleasing children very
much, say Embrapa Vegetables officials. The
materials used in mini-products come from
abroad, a fact that calls for research into new
cultivars and cultivation in tropical conditions,
says researcher Warley Nascimento. If further
growth is to be achieved, there is need to
make strides in the expensive production sys-
tem, in particular, with regard to “baby-leaf”,
ratifies Luís Felipe Purquerio, from the Agro-
nomic Institute of Campinas (IAC).
