M
ore countries are begin-
ning to know and con-
sume the qualified ap-
ples produced in Brazil.
In 2016, although the
crop was considerably smaller, with exports
dropping 50%, the shipments of the sector
reachedmore countries: 27, against 23 in the
previous year. Although themajor focus is di-
rected towards the domestic market, which
the sector is now supplying almost in its en-
tirety, a close watch on the foreign market is
a constant concern, including the pursuit of
newdestinations inseveral continents.
“Exports dropped considerably, due to
crop failure problems, competition from
abroad and the attractiveness of the do-
mestic market, with prices running high
throughout the Country”, concluded the
Hortifruti team of the Center for Applied
Studies on Advanced Economics (Cepea)
, of the Luiz de Queiroz College of Agricul-
ture (Esalq) a division of the University of
São Paulo (USP), relative to the Brazilian ap-
plesharvestedin2016.Atthesametime,im-
ports began to rise to fill the gap opened by
the domesticmarket.
Bangladesh, inAsia, was again the lead-
ing buyer of the Brazilian fruit, in line with
what had happened in the previous years.
But, as a bloc, the European Union is still
the most relevant foreignmarket, account-
ing for more than half of all Brazilian apple
exports in 2016.In the meantime, our im-
ports came from 10 countries, especially
fromChile (almost 50%, totaling 72.7 thou-
sand tons), followedby Italy andArgentina,
with upwards of 20 thousand tons.
In 2017, with more supply, until May
31, according to the Ministry of industry,
Trade and Services (MDIC), Brazil export-
ed 35,900 tons of Apple, whereas in 2016,
the first five months, the country had
shipped 29,900 tons, an increase of 20%
on occurring the previous period. The in-
dustry’s expectation of exceeding 50,000
tons exported House this year, informs
Moisés Lopes de Albuquerque, Executive
Director of the Brazilian Association of Ap-
ple Producers (ABPM).
On the other hand, with the recovery
of the crop in Brazil, the numbers rela-
tive to apple imports should shrink as the
year goes by, the official comments. He
also highlights the efforts by the ABPM,
with support from the Ministry of Agricul-
ture, Livestock and Food Supply (Mapa),
in opening new and discerning markets
for Brazilian apples, which is the case of
Colombia and India. Among other con-
cerns and area management matters, the
association is also engaged in improving
the bureaucratic questions relative to the
ports, which generate unnecessary costs
and delays in the operations.
