The Brazilian seed and seedling sector
supplies, almost in their entirety, the oth-
er segments of our national agriculture.
In the 2014/15 growing season, the sum
of the production of 18 agricultural species
amounted to 3.214 million tons, surpassing
the performance of 2.708 million tons of the
previous year, according to the Brazilian As-
sociation of Seeds and Seedlings (Abrasem).
Of this total, soybean seed is responsible
for almost 2 million tons. It is followed by
wheat and corn seed, with 436 thousand
tons and 370 thousand tons, respectively.
For the seed crop in 2015/16, Abrasem of-
ficials were anticipating a new jump, to a har-
vest of 4 million tons. Demand for seed is ex-
pected to soar over the next years. The fact is,
the production of grains in Brazil is expected
to reach the considerable amount of 255.3mil-
lion tons in the 2025/26 growing season, up
30%, or 58.8 million tons. This step forward
is estimated by the study “Brazil – 2015/16 to
2025/26 Agribusiness “, by the Ministry of Ag-
riculture, Livestock and Food Supply (Mapa).
Seed production numbers are not sys-
temized in Brazil. Data released by Abrasem
relate to the volume expected by every farm-
er the moment they register their seed fields
(about 30 to 45 days after seeding). “That is to
say, these data are only estimates “, clarifies An-

Movement
The seed industry raked in about R$ 10
billion in 2015, according to Abrasem
sources. Soybean and corn seeds had a
share of 37% each, that is, 74%. The share
of the other species was 11% in forage
seed, 6% vegetables 3% wheat, 2% rice, 2%
beans, 2% cotton and 1% sorghum. A huge
portion of the seeds produced in Brazil is
traded in the domestic market. Revenue
derived from exports of some species, like
corn and tropical forage seed, is viewed as
negligible by sources of the sector.
Shipments of several species produced
in Brazil totaled US$ 147.902 million in
2015, according to data compiled by
Mapa’s Agrostat System. In 2014, the value
amounted to US$ 171.576 million, up US$
23.6 million from the following year. In
2016, January through July, foreign sales
brought in US$ 74.102 million.
dré Felipe Carrapatoso Peralta da Silva, direc-
tor of the Farm Inputs Inspection Department
(DFIA), of the Agriculture Surveillance Secre-
tariat (SDA), a division at the Mapa.
According to the director, over the year,
all farmers keep informing the amounts pro-
duced and traded. However, these are written
reports. The exceptionoccurs inRioGrandedo
Sul, where the Rio Grande do Sul Association
ofSeedandSeedlingProducers(Apassul)stores
real data in a system provided by the associa-
tion. “For 2017, the production and commer-
cialization module of Mapa’s Inspection and
Management System (Sigef ) has been sched-
uled to start operating. Then we will have real
data of the amount of seeds traded, per cultivar
and permunicipality “, he explains.
