he use of genetically modified
plants, animals andmicroorgan-
isms for the production of drugs
is part of a technological plat-
form on which researcher Elibio
Rech, from Embrapa Genetic Resources,
in Brasília (DF), has been working since the
1990s. “Biofactories or biological factories
are capable of expressingmolecules of high
added value at low costs and, therefore, are
viable options for the production of inputs,
like drugs and fibers of interest to the indus-
try, among others”, he says.
Moreover, there are chances for these
mechanisms to add more value to Brazil-
ianAgribusiness, once theymake it possible
to add value to agribusiness products, like
plants, animals andmicroorganisms. That is
why Rech believes that the scenario in Bra-
zil within 10 years will be under the over-
whelminginfluenceofbiogenetics.Revenue

pharmaceutical industry is around US$ 10
billion a year. Some 10% of the total is gen-
erated by biotechnological products.
There is evidence that attests to the fact
that the utilization of biofactories could re-
sult into a fifty times smaller cost for produc-
ing recombinant proteins. Equally because of
this, theEmbrapa researcher has it that plants
produce geneticallymodified proteins, identi-
caltotheoriginalproteins,withasmallinvest-
ment,resultingintosafeproductsforconsum-
ers. Furthermore, they represent a cheaper
way for large-scale drug production, because,
as they are not subject to contamination,
they do not require investments in the pro-
cess of purifying of organisms that are poten-
tialcausesofhumandiseases.Nottomention
easeofstoringandtransportation.
