come frequent. “Every year we attend the Inter-
Tabac, in Dortmund, Germany, fair that exhibits
products related to tobacco and smoking acces-
sories.There,westrengthenandexpandourpart-
nerships”, emphasizes Marcos Augusto Souza,
executive director at the Bahia State Tobacco In-
dustry Union (Sinditabaco-BA).
The focus abroad is an attempt to achieve in
part the numbers of the 1990 decade, when the
region produced 50 million cigars a year. Now,
this number remains at 15 million. The antismok-
ing campaigns are blamed for a great proportion
of this decrease, besides favorable negotiations
with other markets, especially markets in Central
America, where major cigar consuming countries
do business. In the meantime, the domestic mar-
ket has been responding well, with an increase of
25%inthemarketinSãoPauloandRiodeJaneiro.
The city of Cruz das Almas is themainproduc-
ing center of the tobacco varieties destined for
the production of Cigars. Cruz das Almas and the
surrounding municipalities give origin to almost
the entirety of the national production volumes.
The sector has upwards of 2 thousandproducers,
who are supposed to harvest around 1 million
tons of filler tobacco in the 2017/18 growing sea-
son, and 2 thousand tons of cigar wrappers. The
bulk of this volumewill be shipped to three coun-
tries: Germany, Holland andChina.
