Brazilian corn was imported by more than
70 countries in 2015, when sales reached a re-
cord amount of 30.745 million tons. The big-
gest volumeswere acquiredbyVietnam, a total
of 4.841 million tons, and by Iran, with 4.207
million tons, representing a share of 15.2%
and 13.8%, respectively. Other relevant ship-
ments were destined for South Korea, a total
of 3.004 million tons, and to Japan, 2.776 mil-
lion tons. In Japan, this cereal is not produced.
Until 2014, Iran was the leading corn
importer from Brazil, according to Sérgio
Mendes, director-general of the National
Association of Cereal Exporters (ANEC). In
the recent past, the North-American embar-
go induced other countries, like South Ko-
rea, to take up the leadership in corn im-

More than 70 countries imported corn from
Brazil in 2015, a time in which Vietnamoutstripped Iran in imports
ports from Brazil. “Now, with an end to the
embargo, Iran is gradually returning to its
former position”, he notes.
According to Mendes, China could also
turn into a huge importing market of Brazil-
ian corn. “Currently, we are not exporting a
single kernel to China, as a result of a Brazil-
China Protocol that was badly conceived”, he
says. However, according to him, this protocol
is being revised and, as soon as the two coun-
tries reachanagreement, China couldbecome
a relevant destination for the Brazilian cereal.
A huge portion of the corn import-
ed by the countries is transformed into an-
imal feed. Mendes understands that Brazil-
ian corn exports will continue soaring due
to the fact that all major importing countries
do not want to depend on foreign beef, pork
and chicken. This is because these are add-
ed value products, which end up promoting
the development of these markets. Neverthe-
less, according to the general director, these
nations will always depend on the primary
product, where Brazil enjoys great advantag-
es as a relevant producer and trader, not to
mention its territorial extension.
MAIN ORIGIN
More than 50% of
the corn exported by Brazil in 2015 was pro-
duced in Mato Grosso, a state that is also
the leading producer in Brazil. In the year
in question, the State accounted for 14.458
million tons of the cereal shipped abroad.
A huge portion of the corn in Mato Gros-
so comes from the second crop. The sec-
ond and third biggest volumes were shipped
Goiás and Paraná, totaling 3.724 million tons
and 3.637 million tons, respectively.
