Departure ports
Brazilian corn is exported in bulk. However, in extremely specific cases, the kernels are shipped in containers. In logistic terms, the
Port of Santos was the main structure utilized by corn exports in 2015, with 15.7 million tons, representing upwards of 50% of all corn
shipped abroad. It equally represented a 77 percent increase over the 2014 performance.
The National Association of Cereal Exporters (ANEC) emphasized the more intense use of ports that had hardly ever been used
for corn shipments abroad. The ports of Itaqui, in São Luís, State of Maranhão, and Vila do Conde, in Barcarena, State of Pará, gave a
contribution of upwards of 2 million tons shipped in 2015, compared to what was exported through these ports in the previous year.
Brazilian corn farmers achieved histor-
ical results in 2015, with a record crop of
84.73 million tons in the 2014/15 grow-
ing season, followed by record shipments
abroad. Throughout 2015, foreign sales to-
taled 30.745 million tons, up 46.69% from
the shipments of the previous year, accord-
ing to the National Association of Cereal Ex-
porters (ANEC). Until that time, the biggest
transaction, of 26.6 million tons, had been
registered in 2013. Brazil ranks as second
biggest corn exporter in the world, coming
only after the United States.
National shipments took advantage of
the higher competitiveness of the Brazilian
cereal due to the appreciation of the dol-
lar versus the Brazilian currency, along with
a big crop. According to Sérgio Mendes,
general director at Anec, Brazilian
corn has similar characteristics to
the corn negotiated by other
countries in the interna-
tional market. “The National Technical Bios-
ecurity Committee (CTNbio) is very careful
in preventing the genetically modified culti-
vars approved here from causing any prob-
lems to consumers”, he notes.
Due to a different methodology, the
Agrostat system of the Ministry of Agricul-
ture, Livestock and Food Supply (Mapa)
points to foreign businesses of 28.902 mil-
lion tons, with revenue of US$ 4.937 bil-
lion in 2015. With regard to the results of
the previous years, revenue was down, in
spite of the bigger volumes.
The director-general of the Anec explains
that 2012 and 2013 were excellent in terms of
commodity prices. Therefore, the volume per
unit ended up beingmore important than the
extra volumes in 2015 and 2016. “That is, the
increase in volume in 2015 was not enough
to make up for the unitary values practiced in
2012 and 2013, exceptional years for the com-
modities in general”, he declared.
In June 2016, Mendes maintained that,
with the international funds geared towards
agricultural commodities, a resumption of
the good prices was likely to happen. “And,
therefore, an eventual increase more than
proportional in revenue, as a result of the
bigger volumes”, he comments.
