were also an adverse effect.

in dollar terms, abroad. Equally the first re-
sults achieved at the ports. The port of San-

to August. In June, 977 thousand tons were
shipped abroad, the biggest volume for this

Indispensable support
The president of the Brazilian Association of Corn Growers (Abramilho), Alysson
Paolinelli, understands that, although exporting huge amounts in 2017, the farm-
ers need to be creative and efficient, and not even so all of them will be able to
avoid losses – especially in the Center-West – if they do not get any support from
the federal government for an assurance of minimum prices and transportation of
the crop. “The auctions, which involve some 5 million tons, are just palliative mea-
sures. We need farm insurance and agricultural policy that guarantee the volumes
produced, income and competitiveness, besides support for the logistic structure,
transportation and warehousing”, he dictates.
In his view, the “cat leap” consists in expanding the protein supply chains
(chicken, pigs, bovine confinement, eggs and milk) in the Center-West, which will
be able to increase by 2.5 times the revenue from the export sector. “All will benefit
from it”, he says. The production of corn-based ethanol, also advocated by themin-
ister of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (Mapa), Blairo Maggi, is just anoth-
er route shown by Paolinelli to add value and reduce surpluses during peak time of
the crop harvested in the Brazilian cerrado. “The transformation into protein and
energy represent the future of Brazilian corn to strengthen the economy and the
agribusiness of the Country. The world wants us to produce and we are able to do
it”, he states.

Energy-based development
The first ethanol mill in Mato Grosso and in Brazil that relies exclusively on corn
should be inaugurated in the second half of 2017 in Lucas do Rio Verde. In 2018,
it will demand almost 1.1 million tons, 4 percent of the current crop in the State.
Another mill, in Vera (MT), will demand more than 400 thousand tons a year. And
three sugarcane-based ethanol mills based in municipalities like São José do Rio
Claro, Campos de Júlio and Jaciara, also in Mato Grosso, buying at least for the
minimumprice (above R$ 18 per sack) in regions where the freemarket operates at
R$ 11 to R$ 13 per sack at the peak of the second crop in 2017.

month on record. Anec officials believe that
there is enough time for a recovery in for-
eign sales, a fact that will gradually con-
tribute towards a gradual restructure of the
domestic prices. In the meantime, domes-
tic consumption is supposed to heat up. In
spite of a first semester with demand run-
ning below expectations and smaller ex-
port volumes (but with gains in revenue),
the chicken and hog supply chains are pro-
jectingan increaseof 1percent in their busi-
nesses abroad in 2017.
