Disease outbreaks have varied from one
regiontothenext,byvirtueof climatecondi-
tions, alongwith the level of susceptibilityof
the cultivars and the planting system. How-
ever, someof thediseases occur, as a rule, in
all main corn-growing regions, an example
is white spot. The researchers understand
that, besides other importantmeasures, the
most attractive strategy for keeping these
diseases under control consist in the use of
genetically resistant cultivars. There is no
additional cost for their use and they do not
cause any negative impact upon the envi-
ronment. Furthermore, this strategy is per-
fectly compatible with other recommended
alternatives and is, frequently, enough for
keeping these diseases at bay.

How to avoid
The most important measures recommended by researchers for managing the-
se diseases are as follows:
- Use of resistant cultivars;
- Planting at the appropriate time, in order to prevent the critical periods of the crop
from coinciding with the environmental conditions favorable to the development of
diseases;
- Use of good quality seed and treated to fungicides;
- Rotation with non-susceptible crops;
- Cultivar rotation;
- Proper filed management: balanced fertilization (N e K), appropriate plant popula-
tion, pest and weed control, timely harvest and appropriate warehousing;
- In case of highly severe pests, fungicides are recommended.
