The relevant producing region in
Bahia and in the Country is again
showing its strength in the 2016/17
growing season and is already
projecting further increases for the
newseason
The Golden grains and cotton fibers are glittering again
in the region in 2017 just like the sun and the courage of
the pioneers who developed Western Bahia, turning the
region into one of the biggest expressions of state and na-
tional agribusiness. After a period of rather unfavorable
results, mainly due to climate problems, a full crop was
again produced in the highly technology-oriented fields
spread across the regional cerrado, filling the warehouses
and meeting the needs of the Northeast, the Country and
the world, revitalizing expectations and the vigor in the
still new, but already consolidated and
ever more promising producing area.
Together, the three main crops grown
in the region - soybean, cotton and corn
- , provided for a production of 7.4 mil-
lion tons, translating into income of R$
6.8 billion. The growth compared to the
previous season, which had been severe-
ly affected by drought conditions, was

up 58% and 81% in the respective indica-
tors, while the cultivated area soared 4.8%,
to 1.95 million hectares. The leading grain
reached a record volume, just like the re-
nowned Bahia fiber that reached its highest
productivity.
The beautiful Picture presented by agri-
business inWesternBahia served as stimulus
to continue with positive performances, ac-
cording to the first estimates for the 2017/18
growing season. The initial favorable weath-
er forecasts indicated the chance for a repeat
of a good crop, likely to surpass the numbers
of the previous year. “Farmers are optimis-
tic about their chances to produce an even
better crop in 2018”, said Luiz Stahlke, agro-
nomic engineer and agricultural advisor to
the Bahia Association of Farmers and Irriga-
tors (Aiba), in early October 2017.
The area to be planted, according to per-
spectives of that time, would further in-
crease, especially with regard to cotton and
soybean. In spite of a smaller corn crop, the
cultivation of the three crops could go up by
2% and production would be in a position to
increase by 6%. This would result into near-
ly 7.9 million tons and, along with the other
two crops in the region, the positive projec-
tions were surpassing 8.1 million tons. West-
ern Bahia, according to its leaderships, con-
tinues to show strength and enthusiasm in
its economy, based on agribusiness and pas-
sion for farming, always in search of better
technology and administration, in econom-
ic, social and environmental terms, to en-
sure sustainability and the future of the ac-
tivity, region and Country.
