LAND OF GRAPES
Wine-growing is concentrated in various
regions throughout the Brazilian states. In Rio
Grande do Sul, viticulture occurs in hilly areas,
prairielands, Southeast Sierra and in a region
known as Campos de Cima da Serra. In San-
ta Catarina, it takes place in the Plateau and in
Campos de Cima da Serra. São Francisco Val-
ley, where fine table grapes are produced, es-
pecially seedless grapes, is located in the states
of Bahia and Pernambuco. These are the lead-
ing viticultural areas in the Country, according
to the BrazilianWine Institute (Ibravin).
Other wine-growing regions include Vale
do Rio Peixe and Rosário do Ivaí, in Santa Ca-
tarina. In Paraná, viticultural areas are locat-
ed in the municipalities of Rolândia, Marial-
va and Maringá. The municipalities of São
Roque, Bandeirantes and Jales are grape pro-
ducing hubs in the State of São Paulo. Ser-
ra Capixaba concentrates the vineyards of the
State of Espírito Santo. In Minas Gerais, the
biggest areas are in the municipalities of Cal-
das, Andrada, Santa Rita and Pirapora. The
municipality of Santa Helena do Goiás is the
leading producer in Goiás. Finally, in Mato
Grosso, viticulture prevails in the municipali-
ty of Nova Mutum.
ares in 2015, down 1.83%. Of this to-
tal, 50,743 hectares were located in Rio
Grande do Sul, 7,821 hectares in São Pau-
lo and 6,833 hectares in Pernambuco.
According to Loiva, in recent years,
from 2013 to 2015, the planted area in Bra-
zil was on a downtrend. In the past, from
2006 to 2012, it went up by about 1.3% a
year. The planted area in Rio Grande do
Sul rose steadily by 1.5% a year over the
past 10 years (2006 to 2015). She explains
that in the traditional regions where small-
scale farms predominate, there were some
limitations to area increases, particularly
due to restrictions coming from environ-
mental legislation, and because of labor
shortages in the countryside. Nonetheless,
viticulture in Rio Grande do Sul is expand-
ing considerably in vast prairielands.
