he Brazilian Southeast region,
with the biggest population den-
sity, is the big producer and con-
sumer of vegetable crops, which
alsofindfertilesoilsfortheirprop-
agation in the temperate climate States in the
verySouth. However, vegetableshavealready
foundtheirwayintotheNortheastandCenter-
West, where some States produce significant
volumes, according to numbers released by
EmbrapaVegetables,basedon2015datafrom
theBrazilianInstituteofGeographyandStatis-
tics (IBGE) and from the Food and Agriculture
OrganizationoftheUnitedNations(FAO).
According to production volumes, São
Paulo, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro, in
the Southeast, are the main national pro-
ducers of horticultural crops. The other
State in the region, Espírito Santo, is also
a relevant producer, with 4.5% of the to-
tal, but is surpassed by the southern States
of Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul, while the
other southern State, Santa Catarina, re-
mains on the same level. This group, at rates
that range from 4% to 5%, equally compris-
es the northeastern states of Bahia, Ceará
andPernambuco, besides Goiás, in theCen-
ter-West, where also the Federal District de-
tains 2%of the production volume.
