maize as in the 2016/17 crop
year, reaching a total of 1.067
billion tons, up 10.8 percent
from the 2015/16 season. This record per-
formance stems from the unprecedented
strides in production in the United States
and Brazil, and from the great recovery of
the planted area and productivity in Argen-
tina, besides the excellent crops in China,
European Union and other relevant pro-
ducers. These data come from the US De-
partment of Agriculture (USDA).
In reality, favorable weather condi-
tions in the leading maize producing coun-
tries played a fundamental role. Driven
by the bigger supply, global consumption
soars 5.4 percent (to 1.034 billion tons)
and boosts international transactions by
32 percent, according to North-American
sources. The strides in production, high-
er than consumption, generate surpluses
and push the global stock up, according to
data released by USDA, published in June
2017. Except for one-off factors and some
regions where demand is strong, interna-
tional prices dropped, reflecting the com-
mercial scenario with tighter supplies.
The season inBrazil showedanexcellent
performance, where the highlight was the
second crop (winter crop), favored by good
weather conditions. Argentina faced flood
and excessive precipitation problems, but
produced more. Excessive rainfall affected
the Corn Belt in the Central and Northeast
regions, from Nebraska to Ohio) and the
North-AmericancropinMayandJuneandis
giving rise to expectations for crop failure in
July, a timewhen theUSDA report functions
as a watershed for the market throughout
theworld and points to trends.
