coordinates the
YoungApprentice
Program ina
Model farm
cated in the Irrigated Barreiras North Perimeter, in Barreiras.
The farm’s infrastructure includes classrooms, an audi-
torium, trial fields and an agricultural entomology labora-
tory, thus providing for theoretical and
practical rural learning. Over 18 year
olds are selected for specific training,
focused on the crops cultivated in the
region. Their Work Permits feature an
apprentice contract in the rural area of
the participants, for a pre-determined
period of time. Up to October 2017, the
considerable number of 209 youth had
been certified, in a position to be hired by rural producers,
and more than 104 were in the graduation process, now at
its 12th group of students.
This is one more initiative made viable
through the Agriculture Development Pro-
gram (Prodeagro), of the regions’ producers.
It is under the coordination of the Aiba, in a
partnershipwith the Rural |Producers’ Union
of Barreiras (SPRB), and support from the
National Rural Learning Program (Senar),
Federation of Agriculture in Bahia (Faeb),
from the São Francisco and Parnaíba Valley
Development Company (Codevasf), Minis-
try of Labor and Employment (MTE), Labor
Prosecutor (MPT), companies of the agricul-
tural segment, associate members of Aiba
and public schools in Barreiras and region,
fromwhere the young are selected.
“The initiative goes beyond compliance
with legislation, and turns into a social re-
sponsibility initiative that paves the way
for new horizons for the young in the re-
gion”, says Helmuth Kieckhöfer, superin-
tendent of the Aiba Institute. “The cours-
es that are offered are an opportunity for
the professionals to improve their profile
as far as agribusiness goes”, stresses Moi-
sés Schmidt, president of the Rural Union.
One of the young apprentices registered in
2017, Danilo Ramos da Silva, completes:
“It is an investment that farmers spent on
us, in the long run, representing a differen-
tial that qualifies us even further for the la-
bor market”.
The chances for learning offered through
theWestern Bahia programprepare the young
in the region’s agriculture supervising jobs,
with special capacity building opportunities
focused on certain subjects. This is the case of
the Course for Identifying andMonitoring Agri-
cultural Pests, in partnership with the Nation-
al Vegetable Surveillance Association (Andef),
and the Grain Grader Course, which Aiba has
been running in a broadermanner throughout
several locations in the region.
