Winter crop
In 2015, corn
and bean after tobacco harvest, as a winter
crop, generated about R$ 650 million in in-
come for the farmers in the three southern
states. Out of the 152 hectares cultivated,
127 thousand were devoted to corn, gener-
ating incomeof R$520million, and25 thou-
sand hectares of bean, bringing in R$ 130
million. Created for Santa Catarina, the pro-
gramwas extended to all other states at the
moment the agreements were renewed.
Currently, it involves the incentive and
guidelines of the partners of technical as-
sistance for the establishment of pasture-
land for dairy cattle. “Our dairy hub is rising
and there is demand for pastureland and
for this integration”, acknowledges Airton
Spies, assistant secretary to Agriculture and
Fisheries inSantaCatarina. He explains that
in Santa Catarina the farms in their major-
ity are small, they rely on family labor and
there is not much land available. This re-
quires techniques for the maximum use of
the area so as to derive as much income as
possible from the holding, along with qual-
ity of life. Within this context, it is livestock
that come in as a complementary activity,
efficiently converting thepasture intomeat.
“The farmer must equally be efficient as a
pasture grower, thus turning into a good
dairy cattle breeder”, notes Spies.
The assistant secretary of Santa Catari-
na insists that tobacco is an excellent part-
ner, as the crop leaves behind an excellent
area suitable to agriculture, with fertiliz-
er residue able to generate good pasture,
which, in turn is transformed intomeat and
milk and income. “On the farm, the limiting
production factor is exactly the area. The ra-
tional and intensive use of this resource is a
determining factor for the success and via-
bility of the holding”, Spies summarizes.
