he Association of Family Farm Schools in Brazil (Enefab) comprises 148
associated Family Farm Schools (EFAs), in 12 regional groups. The first
school dates back to 1968, in the State of Espírito Santo. In Rio Grande
do Sul, currently there are four EFAs, in Santa Cruz do Sul (Efasc), Caxias
do Sul (Efaserra), Vale do Sol (Efasol) and Canguçu (Efasul), totaling 244
students. In South Brazil, the Efasc was the first to join high school and agriculture
technician qualifications, through the pedagogy of alternance – where the farmers’
children stay for one week at school and the next week at home, in an attempt to put
into practice their knowledge.
In the vision of João Paulo Reis Costa, institutional coordinator at EFA Santa Cruz,
