rior result is a reflectionof the climateproblems that hit the State of EspíritoSanto, of the small-

T
he Brazilian coffee crop set an
all-time record in 2016. The to-
tal reached 51.37 million 60-kg
sacks of processed coffee, of
Arabica and conillon. The vol-
ume, according to theNational FoodSupply
Agency (Conab), is up 18.8% from the previ-
ous crop, when theCountryharvested43.24
million sacks. Up to that time, the biggest
national crop occurred in 2014, with 50.8
million sacks. The total cultivated area re-
mained at 2.22million hectares, down 1.1%
from2015. In spite of this, coffee farmers are
commemorating productivity gains.
According to Conab sources, average
productivity remained at 26.33 sacks per
hectare, up more than 17% from the previ-
ous year’s crop. The positive result stems, in
particular, from the favorable weather con-
ditions in themain coffeeproducing regions
in Brazil. Furthermore, the “on year” of the
biennial cyclewas also a factor in themajor-
ity of the regions. São Paulo was the State
that reaped the best results, with 46.7%,
followed by Mato Grosso and Minas Gerais,
with gains of 39.45% and 32% in their har-
vests. With the exception of Rondônia, Ba-
hia, Espírito Santo and Paraná, all other
states took advantage of productivity gains.
In the opinion of the president of the
Brazilian Coffee Exporters Council (CECa-
fé), Nelson Carvalhaes, the positive results
stem from the endeavor of the Country in
pursuit of the production of ever more sus-
tainable coffee, with higher productivity
and more profits for the farmers, through
the expansion of capacity building pro-
grams destined for the farmers, the appli-
cation of technology and research on the
fields. “These efforts can be ascertained
in several regions throughout the country-
side”, he ponders.
Among the initiatives, he points out the
InformedProducer Program, runby theCe-
Production amounted to 43.24 million
sacks, up 18.8% from 2015
