The evolution of annual production
and processing of rice in Rio Grande do
Sul demonstrates that the industry pro-
cessed 69.6% of the total rice volumes
produced in the State in 2015. Back
then, 8,719,449 tons of the cereal were
produced, and processing reached
6,072,365 tons (121,447,296 sacks of
50 kilograms). The difference lies in
the amounts sold in the husk to other
states, stocks and exports of rice in the
husk, besides the losses. Since 2009,
the average annual amount processed
by the industry is 71.8% - 5,784,594
tons processed and 8,054,131 tons pro-
duced.

“Year after year the number of compa-
nies is shrinking and, consequently, so is the
number of industrial plants. Now, this is a
causeforconcern”,arguesKayser.Ontheoth-
er hand, he ponders that the big companies
have been improving their production scale
and the sector has increased by 19.4% the
processing capacity from2009 to 2015 (by 19
million fifty-kilogramsacksof rice).
“The companies in Rio Grande do Sul
seek other markets, in addition to the na-
tional market, that purchase the rice pro-
duced in the State, thus turning the supply
chain more dynamic”. The agronomist also
maintains that, should the trend of shutting
down small companies persist, the State
might experience a gradual increase in the
number of bigprocessingcompanies,which
take advantage of scaled production, and
also have a bigger negotiating power with
the producers and the buyers.
