The Country shipped abroad 26
types of fresh or dried fruit, be-
sidespreservesandpreparations,
in 2016. Total exports amounted to 789.889
thousand tons and brought in US$ 702.388
million, according to numbers released by
the Brazilian Fruit Growers and Exporters As-
sociation (Abrafrutas), based on figures from
theAgrostatsystem,oftheMinistryofAgricul-
ture, Livestock and Food Supply (Mapa). The
result was down 3.63% in volume and 4.5%
invalue fromtheamount negotiated in2015.
It does not include the foreign sales of ca-
shewnutsandchestnuts,of24.699thousand

in2016,downfromthepreviousyear

The drop in exports in 2016 was seen as
small by the technical manager at Abrafru-
tas, Jorge de Souza. Climate related prob-
lems in fruit producing regions and soaring
domestic demandwere a factor in the small-
erresult. Inturn,theexchangeratecontribut-
edtowardsthereductioninrevenueindollar.
According to Souza, the international mar-
ket continues attractive. “Brazilian fruit are
very popular abroad due to the quality and
sustainability of the sector”, he comments.
