T
he production of fruit is gain-
ing momentum in all states in
Brazil. However, some of them
stand out in terms of yearly vol-
umes. São Paulo continues on
the highest position, as the biggest na-
tional producer. The fruit farmers in São
Paulo harvested 15.9 million tons in
2015, according to a survey by the Munic-
ipal Agricultural Production Department
(PAM), of the Brazilian Institute of Geog-
raphy and Statistics (IBGE). Total supply
represents that 20 most produced fruit
in the Country. The most relevant spe-
cies in São Paulo are as follows: oranges
(12.279 million tons), bananas (998 thou-
sand tons), lemons (759 thousand tons),

tangerines (356 thousand tons) and wa-
termelons (240 thousand tons).
The State of Bahia came second,
with 4.905 million tons. The main spe-
cies of fruit in Bahia are bananas (1.068
million tons), oranges (962 thousand
tons) and papayas (723 thousand tons).
Minas Gerais ranks as third biggest pro-
ducer, with a production of 3.17 million
tons. They include oranges (987 thou-
sand tons), bananas (795 thousand tons)
and pineapples (657 thousand tons).
The fourth biggest fruit supply was reg-
istered in the State of Rio Grande do Sul.
The farmers in Rio Grande do Sul are rel-
evant grape producers (876 thousand
tons), apples (598 thousand tons), wa-
termelons (364 thousand tons) and or-
anges (356 thousand tons). Paraná har-
vested 1.608 million tons, of which, 903
thousand tons of oranges, 203 thousand
tons of bananas and 173 thousand tons
of tangerines. Together, the five states
produced 28.093 million tons of fruit, of
a total of 40.953 million tons in 2015.
The value of the production of these
20 species, along with nuts and cashew
nuts, was reckoned at R$ 26.5 billion in
2015, according to PAM/IBGE. The sum
increased 3.4% from the total obtained in
the previous year. For 2016, it is estimat-
ed that the total was reduced to R$ 22.7
billion. Fruit farming generates, on aver-
age, three jobs per hectare. The domes-
tic market consumes about 97% of all
the fresh fruit produced in the Country.
Per capita consumption reaches 57 kilo-
grams. However, Brazilian fruit agribusi-
ness has opted for industrialization, with
the option for exporting fruit derivatives,
generating higher added-value along the
supply chains.
The share of São Paulo amounted to
24.9%, or R$ 6.6 billion, where the main
players are oranges (55.5%), bananas
(11.8%) and lemons (7.6%). Bahia con-
tributed with 11.9%, worth R$ 3.2 billion,
represented by bananas (28%), papayas
(17.7%) and common coconut (11.2%). In
the sequence, RioGrande do Sul andMinas
Gerais rank as third and fourth biggest pro-
ducers, with 9% each, and each state total-
ing about R$ 2.4 billion. In Rio Grande do
Sul, themain crops include grapes (33.3%),
apples (23.2%) and oranges (8.4%). In
Minas Gerais, themain contribution comes
from bananas (35.1%), followed by orang-
es (18.3%) and pineapples (13.6%).
