he Brazilian onion farmers
achieved good results with a lit-
tle help from the climate, be-
sides other factors, in 2016. The
crop achieved a total of 1.563
million tons of onions, outstripping the vol-
ume of 1.461million tons harvested in 2015,
according to the department of Systematic
Survey of Agricultural Production (LSPA, in
the Portuguese acronym), a division of the
Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statis-
tics (IBGE). The planted area reached 56.1
thousand hectares, and average productiv-
ity remained at 27.8 tons per hectare. For
2017, the volume and the planted area are
estimated at 1.605million tons and 57 thou-
sand hectares, respectively. The total value
of the onion crop amounted to R$ 1.814 bil-
lion in 2016, up 35.4%, according to sources
from IBGE’s Municipal Agricultural Produc-
tion (MAP) department.
More than one third of the entire Brazil-
ian crop is harvested in Santa Catarina. The
