he good performance in the pre-
viousyearresultedintobiggerar-
eas devoted to carrots in 2016.
The planted area reached 15,821
hectares in 2016 (or 2016/17
growing season), up 3.29% from the previ-
ous season (or 2015/16 crop year). This area
corresponds to all major producing regions,
closely followed by the team of research-
ers of the Center for Applied Studies on Ad-
vanced Economics (Cepea), of the Luiz de
Queiroz College of Agriculture (Esalq), a di-
vision of the University of São Paulo (USP).
The good performance in the 2015 summer
crop and the high prices during the first half
of 2016 encouraged the arrival of “adventur-
ers” in thewinter cropof that year, theCepea
teammembers clarify.
However, the high productivity in the
2016 winter crop resulted into surplus-
