Total carrot production in Brazil reached 760,600 tons in 2015, according to the
most recent data released by the Municipal Agricultural Production (PAM) survey,
conducted by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The result
remains below the average of 780.3 thousand tons achieved in the three previous
years, according to calculations by researcher Nirlene Junqueira Vilela, from Embra-
pa Vegetables, in Brasília (DF). She relies on information ascertained by the IBGE.
The planted area and average productivity totaled 24,100 hectares and 31.6 tons
per hectare, respectively. The value of the crop amounted to R$ 156.120 million in
2015. Minas Gerais, leading producer of the vegetable, harvested 280,779 tons. The
planted area in Minas Gerais reached 7,089 hectares with an average productivity of
39.7 tons per hectare, according to IBGE sources. The highest average, 60 tons per
hectare, was registered in the Northwest. The States of Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná,
Goiás and Bahia also produce considerable volumes of carrots.
ber 2016, productivity reached 95 tons
per hectare in São Gotardo, State of Minas
Gerais, and in Cristalina, State of Goiás.
This average represented an increase of
30% compared to the average per hectare
achieved in the same period in 2015.
Onmanyoccasions,inthewinterin2016,
bad weather conditions had an adverse ef-
fect on the supply of carrots in the munici-
palitiesofCaxiasdoSul,inRioGrandedoSul,
andMarilândiadoSul, inParaná.With regard
to the2015winter crop, productivity reached
58 tons per hectare (+24%) in the State of
Paraná and 59 tons per hectare in the mu-
nicipality of Rio Grande do Sul (-10%). In
light of the prices below production costs,
the farmers in Irecê, State of Bahia, devoted
smaller areas to the crop in 2016.
The total winter crop in 2016, which ex-
tends from July to November, fetched R$ 10
per 29-kilogram boxes of “unwashed” car-
rots, on average, throughout the regions su-
pervised by the Cepea team. Except in Irecê,
where 20-kilogram boxes are used. The price
is 12-percent below the estimatedproduction
cost, which amounted to R$ 11.40 per box. In
Minas Gerais, the price per box dropped to R$
6.58 inOctober 2016, the lowest in the year. In

Carrot supplies and prices followed on
the heels of all major vegetables in 2016,
according to the Brazilian Program for the
Modernization of the Horticultural Mar-
ket (Prohort), in December, of the National
Food Supply Agency (Conab). The high pric-
es fetched during one crop year encourage
area increases for the next season. Most of
the time, production also goes up and pric-
es go down, which, in turn, makes farmers’
profits shrink. Broad differences were de-
tected throughout 2016 in the distribution
centers analyzed by the Prohort. At Ceag-
esp, for example, the lowest price was prac-
ticed inNovember, anaverageof R$ 1.15per
kilogram, and the highest price in February,
R$ 4.20 per kilogram, on average.
Brazilian exports, grouped in carrots
and turnips, totaled 12,126 tons and US$
4,021,412.00 in 2016, according to the Agro-
Stat system, of the Ministry of Agriculture,
Livestock and Food Supply (Mapa). The big-
gest volume, of 11,126 tons, was shipped
to Argentina. The remaining portions were
sent toUruguay and Venezuela. Minas Gerais
(5,265 tons), São Paulo (3,987 tons) and Rio
GrandedoSul (2,586 tons)were themainori-
ginsof these shipments.
