Over the past two decades, besides the relevant role of the agronomic and
industrial quality of the tobacco exported by Brazil, along with its integrity,
field sustainability became even more important for the international market.
Quality labels and standards are increasingly required for processes that in-
volve the production and processing of the crop when it comes to the process
of ratifying commercial relations. These are challenges that have been con-
quered one by one by the Brazilian supply chain.
“We have made strides in projects focused on environmental sustainabili-
ty, with the farmers producing their own wood, reforesting, preserving native
forests and water sources, adopting systems like direct planting and mini-
mum tillage, collection of empty pesticide packaging, even from crops oth-
er than tobacco, just to mention a few initiatives”, says Iro Schünke, presi-

According to him, social aspects are equally
important and the supply chain has set a good
example in the fight against child labor, farm-
ers and rural workers health and safety, school
attendance by farmers’ children and rural com-
munity concerns. “Our region was a pioneer in
many initiatives that set an example not only
to other supply chains, but to other countries,
too, the official proudly comments.
Another reference is the tobacco farmers’
quality of life. “A recent survey revealed that
the average per capita income of the tobacco
farmers is 70% higher than the average income
of the Brazilian people, and presents good
quality of life indicators”, he explains.
