The production of popcorn in Mato
Grosso, the leading producer of this cere-
al, has been on the decline since the re-
cord crop of 255 thousand tons in 2014.
Popcorn is grown in the second crop of
normal corn. There are no official statisti-
cal numbers about the cultivation of pop-
corn in Brazil, but market-based calcula-
tions indicate that upwards of 80% of the
total national volumes come from Mato
Grosso. Production surveys are conducted
by the state unit of the Brazilian Institute
of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
The area devoted to popcorn soared
considerably in 2014, encouraged by the
FIFA World Cup, say officials from the
IBGE technical team. However, demand
did not keep pace with the big crop, a fact
that resulted into high stocks and conse-
quent reduction in planted area in 2015.
In soccer terms, midfield problems sur-
faced in the popcorn supply chain. Exces-
sive rainfall equally affected productivity
and kernel quality.
The estimated area devoted to this
cultivation totaled 21,835 hectares in the
municipalities in Mato Gross in 2016,
down 13,104 hectares from the previous
year. The crop is estimated at 90,180 tons,
a reduction of 55,031 tons, compared to
the result in 2015. Besides the smaller
area in 2016, productivity – which varies
from 3,600 to 4,200 kilograms per hect-
are – should be affected by the opposite
effect, the lack of timely rains.
About 10 municipalities throughout
the State devote areas to popcorn. But
in June 2016, four municipalities (Bras-
norte, Primavera do Leste, General Car-
neiro and Tangará da Serra) decided not
to plant any popcorn during this season.
The two biggest crops are expected to be
harvested in the municipalities of Campo
Novo do Parecis, with 49,560 tons, and
Sapezal, with 16,380 tons.
According to company Sella Semen-

Campinas Agronomic Institute (IAC), of
the São Paulo State Secretariat of Agricul-
ture and Supply, the price of the nation-
al seed practiced by the seed company is
about R$ 20 per kilogram, or R$ 400 per
20-kilogram bag. In São Paulo, there are
commercial farmers who only plant pop-
corn seed imported from Argentina or
from the SeedCorp company, based in
Rio Grande do Sul. The plant
in Rio Grande do Sul
only sells the varieties
known as Popten
and Poptop II.
