Incentive to consumption
The digital portal “Gluten: Con-
tains Information”, is now available
on the internet. It is an initiative by
the Brazilian Wheat Industry Associ-
ation (Abitrigo), relying on support
from the Brazilian Manufacturers Asso-
ciation of Biscuits, Pasta and Industri-
alized Breads & Cakes (Abimapi), the
Brazilian Association of the Industry
of Bakeries and Confectionery (Sam-
papão) and the Brazilian Society of
Food and Nutrition (Sban). The aim of
the channel is to keep the population
informed about all the questions that
involve wheat flour and its derivatives,
warning about the dangers of the glu-
ten free fad. The site consists of six sec-
tions. Besides the portal, the entities
have created the fan page Gluten Con-
tains Information, which strengthens
the engagement and the interaction
with the users of the social network.

Além do portal, as entidades criaram a

The high risks linked to wheat crops are
inducing the farmers to stop growing this ce-
real. Such factors as weather conditions, pric-
ing, liquidity and productivity, linked to the
production of the cereal, bring about a feel-
ing of uncertainty among the farmers. In the
past two growing seasons, the climate, in par-
ticular, was responsible for a failure in per-
formance and equally jeopardized the quality
of the cereal. Furthermore, the sector com-
plains about the lack of an appropriate com-
mercialization policy, which covers produc-
tion costs and remunerates the farmers. In
2016, the area devoted to wheat is project-
ed to reach 2.119 million hectares in Brazil,
down m 13.4%, or 329.1 thousand hectares.
According to the projections by the Na-
tional Food Supply Agency (Conab), released
in June, the crop should reach 5.882 million
tons, down 347.3 thousand tons from the pre-
vious year’s total. Productivity is projected to
increase from 2,260 kilograms per hectare in
2015 to 2,775 kilograms in 2016. “In spite of
the expected higher productivity, a reduction
in the planted area is expected, resulting into
a smaller crop of the cereal,” explains agrono-
mist Enir Turra, manager of the technical and
economic department of the Paraná Coopera-
tives Organization (Ocepar). “The explanation
stems from the big damages suffered by the
wheat growers in the past season, especially in
RioGrande do Sul, and fromthe favorable situ-
ation of the winter corn crop in Paraná.”
The South is responsible for 91 percent
of the wheat produced in Brazil. The State of
Paraná is the leading producer, accounting
for 54 percent of the entire national wheat
crop. The State is followed by Rio Grande do
Sul, with 34 percent. In the leading wheat
producer State, the reduction in planted area
is estimated at 186.6 thousand hectares, from
1.34 million hectares to 1.15 million hect-
ares. The size of the crop in Paraná is pro-
jected to amount to 3.1 million tons, down
216.2 thousand tons from the previous year.
Following on the heels of the national trend,
productivity, on the other hand, should be
higher, up 218 kilograms per hectare.
The holder of a Master’s Degree in Agron-
omy has it that after the productive failures in
2015, caused by the El Niño phenomenon, for
the most part, in 2016 there is not much con-
cernaboutexcessiverainfallbutthereismount-
ing concern about frost conditions during the
development stage of the crop – the forecast
is for the intensification of the cold fronts in
South Brazil. In light of the constant hardships
brought about by weather conditions, the ef-
forts of the wheat supply chain are focused on
public policies issued by government organs
with the aim to improve the cultivation condi-
tions of this cereal. The claims include the ad-
