With no stimulus
With regard to the new hybrids launched by the IAC in 2015, researcher Eduardo Sawazaki reports that there are basic seeds available
for establishing a field for the production of the IAC 367. “Sella Sementes is not interested in producing this variety because the specialty
corns, including popcorn and White corn, did not achieve the increase experienced by common corn”, he explains.
According to Sawazaki, for the summer crop the farmers are not interested in specialty corns, only in the common yellow corn,
due to its high market price. He also comments that the popcorn crop in the second crop in Mato Grosso is the first to be planted and
should not have suffered any damage from drought conditions. The price of the kernel compared to the price of corn had its relation
diminished, due to the soaring value of corn.
For popcorn to be advantageous, with regard to common corn, the value should be higher or equal to two for one. Sawazaki’s conclusion
is that there is no price stimulus for the production of popcorn in the 2016/17 summer season. As to the second crop, it will all depend on
the corn crop in the 2016/17 growing season and its possible drop in price, or a substantial increase in the price of popcorn.
