of Espírito Santo and Rondônia, and produc-
tionwasdown25%fromthepreviousperiod,
according to officials from the National Food
SupplyAgency (Conab).
The shortage of Robusta coffee forced
the industry to pay higher prices for the
beans, whilst seeking alternatives for the
composition of the blends, like the replace-
ment of the varietywithweaker Arabica cof-
fee, as soft coffeeor coffeeof inferior quality.
Thismade the prices of these types of Arabi-
ca coffee go up steeply, reaching R$ 500 per
sack. According to Cepea sources, the qual-
ity of Robusta was inferior in the 2016/17
growing season, as a result of unfavorable
weather conditions. Huge portions of the
beans were graded below standard, ad-
versely affecting the yield of the variety. The
smaller Brazilian crop and no perspective
for total recovery in the 2017/18 crop year
gave rise to concerns about the global sup-
ply of Robusta coffee.
