Global demand for animal protein is
going to soar over the coming years. This
ascertainment is based on estimates de-
rived from major macroeconomic indica-
tors like, for example, population growth
and higher per capita income. Brazilian
beef will take advantage of this trend by
expanding its share in the global market.
Guilherme Cunha Malafaia, researcher
at the economic department of Embrapa
Beef Cattle, in Campo Grande (MS), un-
derstands that this trend, nevertheless,
will require the national beef farmers to
pay greater heed to two extremely impor-
tant aspects in the global market game,
with an eye towards maintaining their po-
sition: the fragile sanitary status (foot-and-
mouth disease) and traceability.
The states of São Paulo, Goiás, Mato
Grosso, Rio Grande do Sul, Mato Grosso
do Sul and Minas Gerais are the main beef
exporters to the European Union, accord-
ing to data released by the Brazilian Con-
federation of Agriculture and Livestock
(CNA), relative to 2015. Together, the six
states accounted for 99% of all exports of
the product to the European bloc.
According to the projections by the US
Department of Agriculture (USDA), the
main beef importing countries will demand
10.1 million tons in 2024. In Rabobank’s
evaluation, a major global agribusiness fi-
nancer, Brazil is supposed to supply a huge
portion of this additional consumption.
“Judging from the estimates by the
Dutch bank, productivity gains projected
for this decade shall allow the Country to
increase its beef exports by 1 million tons
in 2024, grabbing off 25% of the global
beef trade”, says Malafaia. “The produc-
tivity gains of Brazilian beef cattle will
play a fundamental role in sustaining the
ever-increasing exports”.
