BRAZILIAN WINES
A total of 25 wineries, from the six ma-
jor wine producing regions in Brazil (Rio
Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Bahia and
Pernambuco) participate in the Wines of
Brazil sectoral project, run by the Brazil-
ian Wine Institute (Ibravin), in partnership
with the Brazilian Trade and Investments
Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil). The idea
is to promote wines, sparkling wines and
national juices of the sector, in an attempt
to revitalize the supply chain. The tar-
get markets of the initiative are the Unit-
ed States, China and the United Kingdom.
In 2015, the main destinations for the Bra-
zilian wines were Paraguay, the United
States, Colombia, the United Kingdom, the
Netherlands, Cuba and Japan.
tions that their value in 2015 reached U$
382.61 million, down 13.04% from the pre-
vious year. Specifically in the segment of
wines, during the same period, the amount
imported went up slightly, 1.01%, besides a
significant decline in the value of imports,
10.78%. In all, 77.68 million liters of wine
were imported. “As far as imports go, wine is
the product that stands out for its big cost, a
total of 258.98 million dollars”, she clarifies.
In the sector as a whole, in 2015, Loi-
va ponders that the Country faced a short-
fall of US$ 300,798 million (-14.25%). In
the case of wines and sparkling wines, the
average price paid for imported wines ex-
ceeded the export prices, in 2015, just like
what had happened the previous year.
However, average import and export pric-
es dropped slightly. In 2014, wine was im-
ported at an average price of US$ 3.77 per
liter, and in 2015, it was US$ 3.33 per li-
ter”, she says. “Brazilian wine shipped
abroad fetched US$ 3.1 and US$ 2.33 per
liter in 2014 and 2015, respectively.”
The size of the Brazilian fine wines
market is still insignificant if compared
to countries where wine is traditional-
ly consumed. A study conducted by Loi-
va showed that, in 2015, the consumption
of fine wines, made from Vitis vinifera L.,
reached a total of 100.409 million bottles,
a reduction of 0.77% from 2014. In this seg-
ment, in 2015, imported wines represent-
ed 77.37% of this kind of beverage market-
ed in the Country, approximately 77.685
million liters, whilst the national product
amounted to 22.724 million liters.
