International ports
are very busy, with
a 5-percent increase
in global chicken
meat exports in 2015,

sources
Heavy
traffic
The volume of chicken meat to be trad-
ed in the international market in 2017 is
expected to rise 5.36%, to 11.37 million
tons, according to the forecast released by
the US Department of Agriculture (USDA)
in October 2016. The positive picture is
very close to the 5.26 percent projected
increase in exports for 2016, compared to
2015, when the amount of tons shipped
abroad rose from 10.25 to 10.79 million
tons. Considering just the 10 biggest inter-
national exporters, the percentage growth
should rise to 5.5% in 2017.
Traffic at ports tends to become more
intense in the supplying countries. Brazil,
for example, has occupied the leading po-
sition in the international market for the
13th year in a row, and, according to USDA
sources, should again get close to the evo-
lution soon to be confirmed in 2016, of
7%. The projection is for shipments to go
up 6.7% in 2017, from 4.11 million tons to
4.39 million. USDA’s criteria and data dif-
fer, but are very similar to the projections
by the Brazilian Association of Animal Pro-
tein (ABPA). Another interesting factor is
that Brazil will represent almost 48% (or
275 thousand tons) of the additional in-
ternational exports in 2017. In all, an ex-
tra 580 thousand tons are to be shipped
abroad by the supply chain in 2016.
In the meantime, China, leading pur-
chaser of Brazilian broilers, repeats the
situation found in the production pro-
file and is out of tune with the 10 huge
exporters. For the second year in a row,
this country is going to reduce its share in
the international market, by about 12.7%.
It means that China’s exports are down
20% from the 431 thousand tons shipped
to other countries in 2014. An end to the
imports of broody chicken breeds, after
the outbreaks of avian flu in Europe and
in North America, plus rising demand in
the domestic market, are determining
factors for this type of behavior.
North-American analysts believe that,
although they resume their imports of
broody hens, in light of the people that
require this type of food, Chinese chick-
en farmers will not come back to the lev-
els of international suppliers of chicken
meat in line with their tradition. Brazil
celebrates it as good news.
