TheBrazilian turkey productionwas slight-
ly up from the 552 tons in 2015. The total rose
from 326,637 tons in 2014 to 327,189 tons,
according to the Brazilian Association of Ani-
mal Protein (ABPA). Over the past five years,

Besides broiler meat and turkey, the Country equally exports duck meat. According to ABPA
sources, duck exports reached 2,397 tones in 2015, down 74.7% from the 9,460 tons exported
the previous year. Revenue also decreased fromUS$ 12.835million in 2014 toUS$ 7.637million
in the following year. The State of Santa Catarina accounted for 99.5% of the volume shipped
abroad in 2015; and Rio Grande do Sul, for 0.5%. Exports of whole ducks represented 85.7% of
the total shipped in 2015. The share of cuts amounted to 13.8%; and industrialization, for 0.5%.
The farmers in Santa Catarina slaughtered 1.913 million ducks in 2015, from numbers re-
leased by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (Mapa). Up to 11th November
2016, the number of ducks slaughtered totaled 1.701million birds. Compared to Chicken, ducks
are more resistant to temperature changes. The birds are slaughtered when they are 40 days
old. Brazil did not export goosemeat nor Angolan chicken in 2014 and 2015, say ABPA officials.

respectively, in 2015. The leading producers
are the states of Santa Catarina and Paraná,
which slaughtered 8.763 million birds and
8.291 million, respectively, in 2015, according
to sources from the Ministry of Agriculture,
Livestock and Food Supply (Mapa). The third
in number of turkeys slaughtered, 6.283 mil-
lion birds, is the State of Goiás.
The volume of turkey exported totaled
133 thousand tons in 2015, up 5.9% from the
amount shipped (125.6 thousand tons) in
the previous year. Revenue from the exports
amounted to US$ 288.3 million, down 13.2%
from the revenue brought in in 2014. Total
shipments comprised turkey cuts (62.77%),
industrialized meat (37.18%) and whole tur-
keys (0.05%). “The best export results were
achieved from April to August in 2015”, says
ABPA executive president Francisco Turra.
In 2015, the Brazilian states that account-
ed for turkey exports were Goiás (29.15%),
Paraná (27.49%), Santa Catarina (16.18%),
Minas Gerais (13.75%) and Rio Grande do Sul
(13.44%). The European Union outstripped
Africa as the leading importer of turkey meat
from Brazil. In all, the bloc purchased 57,100
tons of the product, up 10% from 2014. Afri-
ca, second main destination, absorbed 49,400
tones, down from the previous year. American
countries, ranking as third biggest buyers, im-
ported 15,100 tons (-38%).
