PRODUCTIONMEETS THENEEDS
Brazil does not import expressive and constant amounts of fresh tomatoes, since our national volumes are enough tomeet de-
mand. In the industrial scenario, tomatoes are imported year-round and vary according to the needs of the industries – considering
the ending stocks and the national production volumes. In general, they represent less than 5% of the national crop. “Even so, the
purchase of tomato based products from abroad is important for the industries that operate in the Country, especially in terms of
product blends, when it comes to acquiring tomato products of certain characteristics”, says Renata Pozelli Sabio.
In 2015, our imports totaled 33 thousand tons, corresponding to revenue of US$ 32 million, according to data from the Secre-
tariat of Foreign Trade (Secex), linked to the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (MDIC), analyzed by Hortifruti/
Cepea. This volume is down 19% from the imports in 2014 in volume, and down 24% in value. Renata explains that Brazil imports
products utilized as rawmaterial for the production of tomato based food products, like paste – and they represent 89% of the vol-
umes imported in 2014. Finished products, sold directly to consumers, also equally brought fromother countries, and they include
sauces, juices and ketchups.
